Does it harm a mattress to use it on a platform bed without a box spring?

It would be too high with a box spring, but some people say the mattress will wear out sooner without a box spring. Is that true? The platform bed has storage drawers underneath, and seems more useful than a box spring on a frame. Does anyone have experience with this situation?

We are building the platform with the storage, ourselves, because we couldn't find one to buy!

No harm should come to your mattress if you're using it without box springs. We have a platform bed and just a mattress on it. This type of bed provides more support that a box spring in my opinion, beneath the mattress is solid wood. We like our bed, but we don't have underbed storage. You were fortunate to find a platform bed with storage, ya lucky dog!

I'm glad to hear that it works okay for you. We are building our own platform in 3 sections which bolt together (and come apart for moving) with drawers that pull out of the sections. I don't know where we could buy one.

Thank you to everyone for your answers.
