What are the best ways to transition from cribs to beds?

When should we transition our 2 and a half year old twin boys to a bed? What's the best way to do this, and can we just by regular twin size beds, rather than toddler size beds that we'll have to switch again in just a few years?
Thanks so much!

When I switched my twins over I put one in the toddler bed because we had gotten one for free, and kept the other in his crib for about a week just because I wanted to make it a smoother transition and not have 2 out right away. This was the other one was excited to be out as well. I took the front off the other crib because it converted but ended up with both mattresses just on the floor. When we moved they got a full mattress because they wanted to sleep together anyways. When they are older I will get them separate beds but for now this works best and fits in their room better then 2 beds would. But if I wouldn't have had the toddler bed I would have gone with twin beds because of the short time they stay in toddler beds. I think they were in theirs only for a couple of months. I got them bedding for their full bed that was Thomas because it was what they were into and it got them excited to sleep in their new bed.

Put twin sized mattresses on the floor in the boys' room. They can easily get in and out of them when on the floor. As they get bigger, assemble the bed frames and put them on the frames (they should be able to climb into the assembled bed by the time they are 3... but you don't have to make that move that soon if you don't want). Also, if you buy bunk beds, they can be bunked later giving you more room. But, I wouldn't bunk them until the boys are at least 6 years old.

Now is a good time for the change. Twin beds are fine. Take them shopping with you to pick out their new beds. It will seem like more their own idea that way. Also consider pushing their beds together for awhile until they get used to the change. It will be comforting for them to be close. Side rails for the beds are a good idea too.

im no expert, but I think regular twin size beds will be a bit too big and scary for 2 year olds.

I'd suggest getting them those fold out mattresses, and making them nice a colourful (they're not expensive at all!) and in a couple years (age of 5) get them normal beds. just an easy transition!
also, spend the night with them until they fall asleep in their own beds.. dont want them to feel scared!

You should've done this right around the time they turned two. My son transitioned at 20 months and he did great the first night. However, if your sons are used to being rocked or held before bed, then that may pose a problem for you. I never had to soothe my kids to sleep. They always went on their own. And kids who start off going to sleep on their own, really pay off in the end.

And starting out with twin beds is a good idea. It saves you money years down the road. But whenever you do transition, make sure you stick to it. Don't reverse your decision.

My 2 year old got her toddler bed for her birthday. One week later my husband had gotten around to putting it together and that night we talked it up big time. We talked for off and on all night about her being a big girl and getting to sleep in her big girl bed with her new Dora sheets, pillow and blanket. She stayed in bed all night and fell right asleep, like usual.

You can get twin beds, you might want to put one side against the wall for less chance of them falling, and a step stool, but its safer than when they figure out they can climb the walls of a crib and jump out. Its time for them to upgrade and gets them excited about sleeping in big boy beds.

I got a twin size for my daughter when she was 2 years old. But I put a bed rail up on one side and the other side was against the wall. She was fine and liked the idea of sleeping in her BIG bed.
