For a bed, you would only need a quart of paint. Around $10.
I would suggest Olympic 0VOC latex paint with a satin finish for low sheen or semi-gloss for high sheen. This paint has no odor and is non-toxic.

    Lowes carries Olympic.
As for the color, they have all the sample there and you can choose one that suits you.

I would lightly sand the bed using fine grade sandpaper. Then wipe away all sanding dust.
Use a good quality brush, also found at lowes. A 2" brush cost about $8-10.
Well worth the cost for a smooth finish.
I do not think primer will be necessary. You will probably need 2 coats. Allow plenty of dry time between coats. At least 4 hours.

Lightly sand and clean off all dust with a rag and 91% isopropyl alcohol(next to rubbing alcohol). It's much cheaper than denatured alcohol!
Prime with water based primer which you can have tinted close to your paint color. 1 quart should do. Paint with an enamel paint. It is much more durable. 2 coats should do.
If you use spray paint you will need to prime with a spray primer or use an oil based primer.

follow chica's advice.....the others must do crappy work!
if u want a really smooth finish, spray a mist of water on it,
let it dry then sand off the raised fibers the water causes to
swell up.......and ALWAYS use primer and no way would
satin paint be good for this, unless you like your paint to
    get dirty easy.
